We have been here for 6 months and have made trips to the following places:
- Antigua (several times)
- Guatemala City
- Panajachel and Lake Atitlan
- Chichicastenango
- Coban / Lanquin / Semuc Champey
- Tikal / Flores / El Remate
- Finca Ixobel
We also did a two week stint at 'Language School' in Antigua.
We still feel like we've missed half of Guatemala! (but the rest of the world beckons).
I have documented our travels on our website and our blog. We have tried to make note of every hotel, restaurant, and 'good place' that we have encountered, with prices and contact information. So you will find our experiences and our recommendations here:
http://svsoggypaws.com/travel_guatemala.htm
Our style of travel is a small notch above 'backpacker'. We like to see how cheap we can travel and live well.
Many thanks to all the others on the Rio who have given us information on their travels and recommendations. Pass it on!
If I were to recommend a 'starter trip' to a 'newbie' on the Rio, it would be to take the Litegua bus from here to Guatemala City and on to Antigua, and stay for 2 weeks at a Language School. The school experience at Antigua both gives you a language base to do more exploring, and gives you the opportunity to easily do trips to the rest of Guatemala. Antigua is a great break from the heat of the Rio in the summer. |

Agreed, an excellent resource. Thanks Soggypaws and Polvo.
And here's another. Steve and Deborah on s/v Argo have not only done some extensive sailing but do indeed get off their boat and travel throughout Central America. Lots of tips and recommendations for inland travel.
I just added their website to our weblinks at http://riodulcechisme.com/index.php?option=com_weblinks&task=view&catid=25&id=69
and direct at www.svargo.com |
