… a ‘boutique’ hotel in Guatemala City

Hotel San Carlos

If you’d like to treat yourself to some hotel accommodations in Guatemala City that are downright luxurious yet reasonably priced, you should take a look at Hotel San Carlos in Zone 10, virtually next door to the American Embassy.

My wife Jane and I stayed in a suite there recently and felt like we were in a 5 star hotel.

The bathroom itself was as large as most of the entire hotel rooms we usually frequent in Guatemala City.

With a six foot long Jacuzzi tub, double lavatory sinks, hair dryer, mirrored walls, huge thick towels (and there were plenty of them .. you didn’t have to go down to the reception area to get a second towel or wash cloth), a variety of soaps and shampoos and even scented candles, we felt we were being pampered beyond belief for a couple of Rio Dulce boaters.

The rest of the suite was huge with two kingsize beds, dining table, refrigerator and closet. And it was immaculate.

The free wireless internet in the room was extremely fast and the uniformed staff was very professional and pleasant.

And, here’s something unique. Hotel San Carlos will send their courtesy van or taxi to pick you up or deliver you to the bus station or airport – for free.

Adjust that into your costs for a stay in Guatemala City and I think you’ll find Hotel San Carlos even more attractive. The hotel will only use approved, professional taxi drivers that pass its inspection.

Hotel General Administrator Patricia Herrera took us on a tour of the small but luxurous hotel.

“It’s a different concept of a hotel,” she expained. “Originally it was a family home built in the 1950s and has gone through three separate renovations.”

Patricia, who speaks perfect English along with many of her staff, said the hotel could be described as a “boutique” hotel.

Many of the guests there are businessmen and people from the different embassies in Guatemala City.

Since it is located on Avenida La Reforma in Zone 10, it is within easy walking distance to the multitude of Zone 10 restaurants, shopping malls and tourist venues.

Hotel San Carlos has 16 standard rooms, 4 suites and 6 apartments (with refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, stoves and fully equipped kitchen). Smoking rooms are also available.

It also has a courtyard with a small swimming pool, lawnchairs and umbrellas.

Prices start at $72 for a standard single room if you book through the Rio Dulce Chisme-Vindicator using our 25% discounted rates. Double rooms are $85 with the discount, suites are $115 and apartments are $135 and $160, depending upon the size of the apartment.

These rates include all applicable taxes.

And, of course, all room rates include a free breakfast in the hotel’s indoor or outdoor restaurants.

Patricia noted that the restaurant and bar are open to the public, not exclusive to hotel guests. Beautifully decorated, the restaurant offers national and international food.

Visitors are encouraged to stop by for a drink or meal and ask for a tour of the hotel facilities.

If you have a car, Hotel San Carlos has a secure private parking area with 24/7 security.
